Essay writing skills

An essay is a piece of writing about a particular topic. It consists of a group of connected paragraphs (generally more than three), which serves one of the following purposes, eg to:

  • explore
  • discuss
  • describe
  • analyse
  • compare.

Essays follow a set structure – they are continuous, connected pieces of writing, written for a specific audience, eg your teacher / tutor. An essay presents a position on the topic and then argues it.

This unit takes you through the process of how to structure, plan and order an essay. Use the links below to navigate to the specific areas.
