General conversion

To convert fractions to decimals:

  • divide the numerator by the denominator.

Shortcuts

Fractions with a denominator of 10, 100 etc.

Divide by shifting the decimal point in the numerator to the left, according to the number of zero's in the denominator.

Example of multiplying with denomiator of 5

Fractions with a denomionator of 5

Because 
                  
convert a fraction with a denominator of 5 to a decimal , by multiplying the numerator by 0.2.

Example of multiplying with denomiator of 5

 

Fractions with a denominator of 4

Because 
                   Working with a denominator of 4                              

It is useful to remember the decimal form of fractions 1/2, 1/4, and 1/5. Multiples of these fractions can then be easily found.
