Equivalent fractions

Equivalent fractions represent the same part of a whole. If you divide a whole into quarters then take two quarters you have a half. Two quarters and one half are equivalent fractions.

Equivalent fractions can be found by:

  • multiplying both the numerator and the denominator by the same number

  • dividing both numerator and denominator by a common factor.

A fraction is said to be in its simplest form when the numerator and denominator have no common factors (except 1).

1/4 and 2/5 are fractions in their simplest form.
