Multiplying fractions

To multiply fractions:

  • reduce the fractions to their simplest form
  • multiply the numerators to give the new numerator
  • multiply the denominators to give the new denominator
  • simplify the answer if possible.

Dividing fractions

To divide one fraction by another fraction:

  • invert ("tip over") the fraction you are dividing by (the divisor)
  • multiply this result by the fraction being divided.
